Detailed instructions on how to install & run Wing with Winboard

  1. Download Winboard 4.2.7: click here and save this file to your desktop

  2. Install Winboard 4.2.7: Double-click on winboard-4_2_7a.exe to install Winboard, use all default settings and directories for the installation of Winboard.

  3. Create a Shortcut to Winboard on your desktop: right-click on your desktop with the mouse: New - Shortcut, and then fill in the following:  C:\Program Files\WinBoard\winboard.exe

  4. Delete winboard-4_2_7a.exe from your desktop as you don't need it anymore

  5. Create C:\Program Files\Wing: go to C:\Program Files and then File - New - Folder, rename this folder to Wing

  6. Download Wing: click here and save this file to your desktop

  7. Install Wing: Click on wing.zip to open the file, then open the newly created folder (see step 5) C:\Program Files\Wing in another window. Select all files from the zip file and drag them into the newly created folder C:\Program Files\Wing

  8. Edit C:\Program Files\Wing\wingx.ini to accommodate your needs, pay special attention to memory usage: don't use more than 50% of the total available memory (as a maximum).

  9. Delete wing.zip from your desktop as you don't need it anymore

  10. Modify the Winboard Shortcut on your desktop: right-click on the shortcut and then select Properties. in Target, fill in the following: "C:\Program Files\WinBoard\winboard.exe" /debug /cp /fcp "C:\Program Files\Wing\wingx.exe"

  11. Test: click on the Winboard shortcut on your desktop, to test the installation. You will see a Winboard Startup Window, click OK.

  12. Customize Winboard: you can change the Window size, sounds, board and piece colors, Options - General - Show Thinking, etc.
